What is automotive steel sheet?
Carbon steel used for automotive body components can generally be divided into two categories:
(1) Carbon steel with low carbon content and good plasticity, such as galvanized steel sheets. Components such as the fender, engine hood, trunk lid, and body side panels of the car body are made from this type of material.
(2)High-strength steel, which is used to manufacture internal panels and reinforcement plates of the car body. The functions of car body steel sheets include deep drawing performance, paint adhesion performance, bending performance, and rust prevention performance.

 Automobile Steel Classification

High-strength steel

High-strength steel is mainly used for the materials used in the load-bearing part of the vehicle body structure. It has the characteristics of high strength, good plasticity, high toughness, good weldability, etc., which can effectively improve the strength and bending and torsion resistance of the whole vehicle.

High-strength steel

High-toughness steel

The characteristics of high-toughness steel are that it has better impact toughness and good collision resistance under the same strength. Therefore, it is mainly used in local parts such as doors, roofs, engine hoods, and parts that need to absorb energy such as rear enclosures and roof curves in automobile production.

High-toughness steel

Stainless steel

Stainless steel has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and long life. It can be used to manufacture exhaust systems, water tanks, fuel tanks and other parts in automobile production, and has a good use effect.

Stainless steel

Galvanized steel

Galvanized steel is electroplated and melted to form a zinc layer on the steel surface. It has good corrosion resistance and is mainly used for corrosion protection of the outer surface of parts, such as car doors and roofs.

Types of high-strength steel for automobiles

1. Dual Phase Steels (DP Steel)

Performance characteristics: no yield extension, no room temperature aging, low yield strength ratio, high work hardening index and high bake hardening value.
Typical applications: DP series high-strength steel is the preferred steel for structural parts, and is widely used in structural parts, reinforcements and anti-collision parts. For example, cross members, rails, anti-collision bars, anti-collision bar reinforcement structural parts, etc.

2. Complex Phase Steels (CP Steel)

Performance characteristics: fine grains and high tensile strength. Compared with dual-phase steels of the same level of tensile strength, its yield strength is significantly higher. It has good bending performance, high hole expansion performance, high energy absorption capacity and excellent flanging forming performance.
Typical applications: chassis suspension parts, B-pillars, bumpers, seat rails, etc.

3. Transformation Induced Plasticity Steels (TRIP Steel)

Performance characteristics: The structure contains retained austenite and has good forming performance. During the forming process, the retained austenite will gradually transform into hard martensite, which is conducive to uniform deformation. TRIP steel also has the characteristics of high collision absorption energy, high strength-plasticity product and high n value.
Typical applications: parts with relatively complex structures, such as B-pillar reinforcement plates, front longitudinal beams, etc.

4. Martensitic Steels (MS Steel)

Performance characteristics: high yield strength ratio, high tensile strength, relatively low elongation, and the tendency to delayed cracking needs to be noted.
Typical applications: cold stamping of simple parts and roll-formed parts with relatively simple cross-sections, such as bumpers, door sill reinforcements, and anti-collision bars in side doors.

5. Quenching and Partitioning Steels (QP Steel)
Performance characteristics: With martensite as the matrix phase, the TRIP effect of retained austenite during deformation can achieve higher work hardening ability, so it has higher plasticity and forming performance than the same level of ultra-high strength steel.
Typical applications: Suitable for automotive safety parts and structural parts with more complex shapes, such as A and B pillar reinforcements.

6. Twinning Induced Plasticity Steels (TWIP Steel)
Performance characteristics: TWIP steel is a fully austenitic steel with high C, high Mn and high Al content. Through the dynamic refinement induced by twinning, it can achieve extremely high work hardening ability. TWIP steel has ultra-high strength and ultra-high plasticity, and the strength-plasticity product can reach more than 50GPa%.
Typical applications: TWIP steel has very superior forming performance and ultra-high strength, and is suitable for parts with high requirements for material drawing and bulging performance.

7. Press Hardening/Boron Steels (PH Steel or B Steel)
Performance characteristics: ultra-high strength (tensile strength of more than 1500MPa), effectively improve collision performance, lightweight body; complex part shape, good formability; high dimensional accuracy.
Typical applications: safety structural parts, such as: front and rear bumpers, A-pillars, B-pillars, center channels, etc.

FAQ

Q: What are the characteristics of automotive steel?

A: Automotive steel is a specially designed and manufactured steel with a specific set of properties and characteristics to meet the requirements of the automobile manufacturing process. Automotive steel generally requires the following properties: strength and hardness, plasticity and formability, corrosion resistance, lightweight, and safety. In response to these requirements, automotive steels typically come in a variety of steel grades and alloy formulations to meet specific performance needs.

Q: What are the common automotive steels?

A: Common automotive steels include high-strength steel (DP590, DP780, DP980), hot-rolled steel (TRIP780, TRIP980, 22MnB5, 30MnB5), cold-rolled steel (SPCC, SPCD, SPCE), galvanized steel (SGCC, SGCD, SGCE )wait. Each type of steel has its specific uses and advantages, and GNEE will select the appropriate material based on the customer's specific design needs and cost considerations.

Q: What kind of steel for auto body?

A: Mild steel, often referred to as low carbon steel, is popular in auto body repair due to its unique properties. Its low carbon content makes it malleable and ductile, which is ideal for shaping and bending during repairs. Additionally, mild steel welds well, which is crucial when affixing new panels to a car's frame.

Q: What kind of steel is mainly used for automobile body outer panels?

A: Steel for automobile body outer panels is mainly used to manufacture front, rear, left and right door outer panels, hood outer panels, trunk lid outer panels and other parts. It should have good formability, corrosion resistance, dent resistance and good electric weldability. Coated sheets are often used for exterior panels of automobile bodies to meet anti-corrosion requirements. In order to improve dent resistance, bake-hardened steel, high-strength IF steel and cold-rolled annealed dual-phase steel (such as DP450) with high formability are often used. Coated boards are mostly made of hot-dip galvanized sheets, hot-dip galvanized iron sheets, electro-galvanized sheets, electro-galvanized-nickel sheets, etc.

Q: What are the advantages of high-strength steel plates as automotive steel?

A:High-strength steel plates can be divided into ordinary stamping grade, deep drawing grade, and ultra-deep drawing grade. Using it to replace traditional steel plates in manufacturing cars can reduce the weight of the car by 15% to 20%, while achieving lightweight and increasing safety performance. High-strength steel generally refers to cold-rolled 340MPa and hot-rolled steel above 490MPa. These new high-strength steel plates have a lower yield ratio, better strain distribution capability and higher strain hardening characteristics. At the same time, the mechanical properties of high-strength steel plates are More uniform, resulting in better impact characteristics and higher fatigue life.

Q: What is the development trend of automotive steel?

A: The application of high-strength steel is increasing. With the increasing demand for automobile lightweighting and energy conservation and emission reduction, automobile manufacturers are increasingly using high-strength automotive steel to reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel efficiency and collision safety. High strength steel has a high strength to weight ratio, which can provide good structural support while reducing body weight. Traditional fuel vehicles rely more on advanced high-strength steel to promote lightweight. Although the weight reduction rate of using advanced high-strength steel to replace traditional steel is not outstanding, the high tensile strength and yield strength performance of advanced high-strength steel are still crucial in key structural components of automobiles.
