Stainless Steel 316 is an austentic steel comprising molybdenum which provides overall better corrosion resistance. This steel also provides higher resistance than SS 304, particularly to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. This superior steel does not require post weld annealing when welding thin sections. It also has excellent strength and even down to cryogenic temperature.Stainless Steel 316L, is relatively a lower carbon austentic steel than SS 316. This steel is also immune from sensitization and hence used in heavy gauge welded components.
