17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel. The performance characteristic of 17-4PH is that it is easy to adjust the strength level, which can be adjusted by changing the heat treatment process. 17-4PH has good attenuation performance, strong resistance to corrosion fatigue and water droplets.

17-4 PH should not be used in the solution treated condition. The strength and corrosion resistance properties of 17-4 hold up well is service temperatures up to 800° F. Fabrication techniques for this steel is similar to those established for the regular stainless grades. 17-4 machines well, has excellent welding characteristics, and forges easily. The combination of good mechanical and processing properties makes this grade adaptable to a wide range of uses.
