SS 405 Sheet Plate

The SS 405 sheet plate invention and use of stainless steel can be traced back to the First World War. At that time, the British guns on the battlefield were always transported back to the rear due to wear and tear. The military SS 405 sheet plate production department ordered Brearley to develop SS 405 sheet plate high-strength wear-resistant alloy steel, specializing in solving the wear problem of the gun chamber.

The grade SS 405 sheet plate is used for similar applications to other lower chromium ferritics.

The aluminum addition prevents hardening when cooling from welding, hence effects an overall improvement in weldability. Type 405 SS 405 sheet plate cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
