Type 302 plate steel is corrosion resistant in many environments, and the corrosion properties are similar to that of 304/304L stainless steel. The Type 302 plate steel susceptibility to carbide precipitation during welding restricts the use of Type 302 plate steel in some applications and 304L is used because of its lower carbon content for welded applications.

302 stainless steel is an extremely tough, ductile grade that demonstrates superior corrosion resistance. 302 SS is non-magnetic, and it is not hardenable by heat treating. While it can be cold worked to increase hardness, it will also cause it to become slightly magnetic.
