Why do power transformers use silicon steel sheets as cores?

Oct 25, 2023

I believe everyone is already familiar with transformers. "Why the power transformer core must be grounded and only allowed to be grounded a little." Generally speaking, the commonly used transformer core is silicon steel sheet, so you know why silicon steel sheet is chosen as the transformer Iron core?

What is "silicon steel"? What properties does it have?

Silicon steel is actually a kind of silicon-containing steel, and its silicon content is 0.8-4.8%. It has the characteristics of high magnetic permeability, low coercivity and large resistivity, so hysteresis loss and eddy current loss are small. Mainly used as magnetic materials in motors, transformers, electrical appliances and electrical instruments.

Why choose "silicon steel" as the core of the transformer?

Silicon steel is used as the core of the transformer, first of all because of the characteristics of silicon steel itself: it is a magnetic material with strong magnetic permeability. Therefore, in the current coil, it can produce greater magnetic induction intensity, which can reduce the size of the transformer.

In addition, the hysteresis loss of the transformer core is small, which can greatly reduce the degree of heat generation.

In fact, the power loss of the transformer is not only reflected in the resistance of the coil, but also in the iron core. We usually refer to the power loss in the iron core as "iron loss". Iron loss is caused by two reasons, one is "hysteresis loss" and the other is "eddy current loss".

Hysteresis loss refers to the loss caused by the hysteresis phenomenon in iron during the magnetization process. The loss is proportional to the area enclosed by the hysteresis loop of the material. Since the hysteresis loop of silicon steel is narrow, the hysteresis loss of the core used as a transformer is small, which can greatly reduce the degree of heat generation.
