17-4 PH Martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steels have a predominantly austenitic structure at annealing temperatures of around 1040 to 1065°C. Upon cooling to room temperature, they undergo a transformation that changes the austenite to martensite.

Nitriding
To increase the resistance to surface wear, with a slight decrease in corrosion resistance, 17-4PH / SUS630 stainless steel can be nitrided. An approximate hardness of 64/67HRc can be achieved, with a surface hardness depth of up to 0.15mm when nitrided at 45°C, while still maintaining a high core strength.
17-4 PH steel (AMS 5604) is a grade of martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel with the additions of chromium, nickel, and copper. 17-4 stainless steel has a valuable combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and toughness in both base metals and welds.
