1. What is DC04 Steel

DC04 carries material number 1.0338 and the older German designation St 14-03. It is the standard deep-drawing quality of EN 10130, one step above DC03 and one below DC05.

Note the direction of the yield figure. DC04 is capped from above, not guaranteed from below, because a drawing grade has to stay soft enough to flow into a die. r90 and n90 are reported only when they are agreed at the time of enquiry and order, so ask for them explicitly if your tooling depends on them.

2. Dimensions and the Tolerance Regime

Two standards apply to one product, and this is where most specifications go wrong. EN 10131 covers cold rolled uncoated wide flat products; its normal tolerance class for 0.80–1.00 mm is ±0.05 mm, and the special class is roughly 20–30 % tighter. Once the coil is slit to 108 mm - well under 600 mm - the strip falls into EN 10140, the narrow strip standard, which uses thickness classes A, B and C and adds shape limits: camber measured over a 1 000 mm gauge length, flatness with a default maximum deviation of 10 mm over 1 000 mm, and out-of-squareness of 1 mm for widths up to 100 mm or 1 % of width above it. A 108 mm strip sits just past that 100 mm break, so its squareness limit is about 1.1 mm, not 1 mm.

3. Surface Quality and Finish

EN 10130 defines surface quality classes A and B, and finishes b (Ra ≤ 0.40 µm), g (Ra ≤ 0.90 µm), m (0.6 µm < Ra ≤ 1.9 µm) and r (Ra ≤ 1.6 µm). For visible or coated parts, order class B with the smooth or extra-smooth finish; for parts that are painted after phosphating, class A is usually enough. Strip is delivered oiled, and the oil must be removed before welding or painting.
