Wet and oily industrial areas are where most floor slips happen. Water, oil, grease and process liquids form a thin film on walking surfaces, turning ordinary steel grating into a hazard. Why Wet and Oily Surfaces Are Dangerous

 

A slip requires two conditions: a smooth contact surface and a contaminant between the surfaces. On a walkway the contaminant is usually water, oil, grease, coolant, food residue or condensation. In dry conditions the rubber-to-steel contact of a normal boot is enough; once a liquid film forms, the boot can slide on the film before the sole touches the steel. This is why smooth grating – perfectly safe in a dry warehouse – becomes a liability beside a wash-down bay or a machine that leaks oil.

 

How Serration Provides Grip in Wet and Oily Conditions

 

Serrated bearing bars carry a row of notches cut into the top edge, typically every 3–6 mm. The mechanism is mechanical rather than frictional:

The teeth bite into the shoe sole, creating grip that does not depend on a dry surface

The notches break up and drain the liquid film at each contact point, interrupting the film that causes sliding

Water and oil fall through the open mesh instead of pooling on the surface

Slip tests commonly report coefficients of friction of roughly 0.7–0.9 for serrated surfaces in dry conditions, and substantially higher retained values than plain steel once water or oil is introduced. Serrated galvanized grating is therefore the standard specification in industries where wet or oily walking surfaces cannot be avoided.

 

Why Galvanizing Matters in Wet and Oily Areas

 

Serration solves the slip problem, but a wet and oily environment is also a corrosive one. Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication provides:

A metallurgically bonded zinc coating on the bearing bars, cross bars and every weld

Protection of cut edges and the serrated teeth, which would otherwise be the first points to rust

Long, low-maintenance service life in humid, wash-down and mildly chemical atmospheres

 

Two points are specific to serrated galvanized grating:

Galvanize after fabrication – serrating, cutting, banding and welding must be completed before galvanizing so the zinc reaches every notch and edge.

Serration stays effective – galvanizing adds only a thin layer, so the teeth remain sharp enough to grip. Heavy paint or powder coating, by contrast, can fill the notches and undo the anti-slip benefit; if a painted finish is unavoidable, the walking surface should be masked.

OSHA walking-working surfaces rules require slip-resistant walking surfaces and are a common trigger for upgrading smooth to serrated grating

ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 governs bar grating design, including serrated load ratings

AS1657 (Australia) and BS 4592 (UK) set grating requirements for access and walking surfaces

Ask the supplier for the slip-test report (for example to ASTM F1679 or DIN 51130) and the serrated load table for the exact configuration. Serrated bars have a slightly reduced effective section compared with smooth bars of the same nominal size, so the load rating should come from the serrated table, not the smooth one.

Serrated grating in wet and oily service performs best when the notches stay open:

Wash down with water or high-pressure cleaning where residue builds up

Do not let oil, mud or product build up and fill the serrations – a filled notch behaves like a smooth surface

Inspect galvanized coating where traffic is heaviest; touch up any damage with zinc-rich repair coating

Debris that can pass through the mesh should be allowed to fall through rather than accumulate
