Differences between hot-dip galvanized and cold-dip galvanized pipes

1. Production Process
Hot-dip galvanized pipes: Galvanizing is achieved by immersing the steel pipe in a molten zinc furnace. The high temperature causes the zinc to react with the steel, forming a zinc-iron alloy layer. This layer is then coated with pure zinc. This process is typically performed at around 400°C.
Cold-dip galvanized pipes: Also known as electrogalvanizing, zinc is applied to the steel pipe surface via electrolysis. This process occurs at room temperature, and no zinc-iron alloy layer is formed. The coating is primarily pure zinc.

2. Coating Properties
Hot-dip galvanized pipes: The coating is thicker, generally over 35 microns, and adheres tightly to the steel pipe surface, providing a uniform, strong adhesion and excellent corrosion resistance. The zinc-iron alloy layer provides a stronger bond between the coating and the steel pipe substrate, resulting in excellent wear resistance.
Cold-dip galvanized pipe: The coating is thinner, typically between 5 and 15 microns. The coating has weak adhesion and relatively poor corrosion resistance, making it easily damaged by the external environment.
3. Applications
Hot-dip galvanized pipe: Due to its excellent corrosion and wear resistance, it is widely used in the construction, machinery, coal, chemical, power, railway vehicles, and automotive industries. It is particularly suitable for outdoor environments, humid areas, and highly corrosive environments.
Cold-dip galvanized pipe: Due to its thin coating and weak corrosion resistance, it is mostly used in interior decoration, electrical appliance manufacturing, and light industrial product manufacturing, and is suitable for dry environments.
Hot-dip galvanized pipe is widely used in many fields due to its excellent corrosion resistance and long service life. Methods such as appearance inspection, zinc coating thickness inspection, chemical composition analysis, and salt spray testing can effectively identify the quality of hot-dip galvanized pipe and select the most cost-effective product.
