The secret of transformer - high voltage package and low voltage

Feb 28, 2024

Today we will lift the veil of mystery and gain an in-depth understanding of a seemingly ordinary but critical design choice in the manufacturing process of distribution transformers: Why should the low-voltage winding be cleverly "hidden" in the high-voltage winding?

Let's watch it together~

There is a difference in voltage

First, we need to understand that the voltage of the high-voltage winding is relatively high. If the low-voltage winding is placed outside, sufficient insulation distance needs to be maintained between the high-voltage winding and the core to prevent electric shock and other safety hazards. This inevitably leads to the use of more insulation materials and increases manufacturing costs.

Tips to reduce insulation costs
In order to reduce costs, designers cleverly placed the low-voltage winding inside the high-voltage winding, so that the low-voltage winding can be closer to the core and reduce the need for insulation distance. This not only ensures safety, but also reduces insulation costs, providing economic advantages for the production of transformers.

The wisdom of voltage regulation and layout
Secondly, the voltage regulation of the transformer mainly depends on the number of turns of the high-voltage winding. The high-voltage winding is arranged outside to facilitate the expansion of the transformer lead wire at two points, making voltage adjustment more flexible and convenient.

Through such ingenious design, we not only achieve a balance between safety and cost, but also improve the voltage regulation capability of the transformer, providing more possibilities for different power needs.
