What Is The Thickness Standard For Galvanized Coils?

Oct 13, 2023

Galvanized coil

Galvanized coil is a metal material with anti-corrosion properties. Its main feature is that it is not easy to corrode. Its galvanized layer can protect the steel plate body and extend its service life. Due to its strong anti-corrosion properties, it is widely used in construction, metallurgy, home appliances, transportation and other fields.

Qualification standards for galvanized coils:

1. Thickness: Generally speaking, the thickness of galvanized coil is above 0.3mm, with 0.6mm, 0.8mm, 1mm and 1.2mm being the most commonly used.

2. Zinc layer quality: Zinc layer quality is the key to measuring the anti-corrosion performance of galvanized coils, mainly including zinc layer thickness, zinc layer morphology and zinc layer coverage.

3. Appearance quality: The surface of the galvanized coil should be smooth and free of pitting, wrinkles, bubbles and other defects.

How to choose the appropriate galvanized coil thickness:

The thickness selection of galvanized coils is mainly determined by the use occasion. Generally speaking, the construction industry uses 0.3-1.2mm thin plates; metallurgy, machinery, and light industries generally use 1.5-4.0mm medium plates; heavy industries such as automobiles, ships, large containers, and railway locomotives use 4.5-100mm thick plates.

The standard for galvanized coil depends on the country or region where the coil is produced and the industry it is intended for. Here are some of the commonly referenced standards for galvanized coils:

ASTM Standards: In the United States, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) provides standards for galvanized steel. ASTM A653/A653M is a widely recognized standard for hot-dip galvanized steel and galvanized steel sheet.

EN Standards: In Europe, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) provides standards for galvanized steel. EN 10346 is the standard for continuously hot-dip coated steel flat products.

JIS Standards: In Japan, the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) govern various aspects of steel production, including galvanized coatings. JIS G 3302 is the standard for hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheet and strip.

GB Standards: In China, the National Standards of the People's Republic of China (GB) provide guidelines for galvanized steel production. GB/T 2518 is the standard for continuous hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheets and coils.

ISO Standards: The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) also has standards related to galvanized coatings. ISO 3575 specifies the requirements for cold-reduced carbon steel sheet in coil form.
